raw grains?

I am new to the raw food diet and have some questions.

Is whole wheat flour raw?

i figured out that regular oatmeal wasn't raw and cannot figure out how to shop for raw grains in a grocery store, what common grains are raw in a grocery store such as Shaws of hannafords?

Whole wheat flour is not raw, because the grains get overheated during the grinding process. But even if you grind it yourselves at home, making sure the temperature does not go above 43 C or so, then it would still be a very unhealthy choice and very acid forming.

Any suitable whole grains need to be soaked at least, then sprouted if possible to reduce the anti-nutrients like for example phytic acid which which would otherwise interfere with calcium absorption. Soaked grains are also less acid forming.

Regular oatmeal is not raw. The reason is that fresh raw oats does not keep very well because of the high fat content. It gets rancid.

Quinoa and amaranth are good choices. Millet is also a good alkaline grain.

hi dandilion, i just heard about the phytic acid in grains a little while ago too and that scared me. i plan on going to the natural foods store soon and buying wheat grains to sprout, i have never sprouted anything in my life so this very new to me. i have tried sprouts in the past, oh they are so good!

i still have a whole bag of wheat flour and some containers of whole grain rice, what should i do with them?

the rice brands that i have are "rice select" long grain brown rice and short grain sushi rice and "shaws" long grain brown rice, i am not sure if they are raw and sproutable.

thank you

Dr. Alan Smith

Hi:
I too am a new member. As a Doctor of Chiropractic my philosophy is the power that made the body can heal the body. Still, I like to rely on available evidence based health care. The raw food diet has peaked my interest. Can you direct me too the scientific research that shows a raw food diet is more healthy than cooking your veggies?

Thanks for your help.

I keep raw oat groats in my refrigerator and use a special roller. While raw grains aren't optimal they are so much less damaging than processed and cooked grains.

Many health food stores carry raw grains, if you can soak and they sprout, it means they are raw.

There have been some good studies done on the positive effects of a raw food diet but the personal testimonies outweigh those studies by far. Plus funding raw food studies is not as easy as funding meat, dairy and processed food studies. There have also been studies on micro managing nutrients but there's been no evidence that taking those supplements have helped anybody live longer lives.

You could probably find some studies by googling. I also highly suggest the book 80/10/10 by Dr. Douglas Graham.

You already know that raw food is not damaging to a system, why not try going 100% raw for a month and record your personal results? i find that the best evidence to anything is based on personal experience over studies. Studies can't tell you what your own results will be.

As for if raw food being healthier than cooking your veggies, just look at the color and texture change of foods that have been cooked. 99.9% of the nutrients have been denatured by heat. How would a body use denatured nutrients better than fresh nutrients? Some 'doctors' say to cook food to make certain nutrients available, but they don't tell you that by cooking it you are making the other 99.9% nutrients unavailable. Would you rather eat a cooked tomato knowing that only 1 in 1000 nutrients are going to be more available to you?

Raw grains are any grains that will sprout and grow.

I'm not sure what you can find at your major supermarket, but raw grains include things like barley, millet, quinoa, rye, spelt, teff, wheat berries, amaranth, buckwheat, corn and kamut. Oats are definitely also a grain, but I've been reading that to get it raw you really need to go to a raw food distributor.

One of my sprouting charts says that, generally speaking you want to soak your grains for 8-10 hours, and then it should sprout in 3-5 days. Assuming it has been properly sprouted, then with sprouting, you know your grains are raw. No sprouting, it's been cooked. (Soak & sprout time & method varies by grain.)

There's a lot to go into with sprouting, too much for me to write, so I would suggest researching that in a book or elsewhere on the internet.
