I guess I forgot to do this
Hello everyone... my name is Mike, and I've been raw for about a week now. haha. It's been staring me in the face for a while. I've known that I should go raw, and it just took me a while to finally make that personal decision and jump in.
I learned about raw and living foods while I was living in southern Oregon, doing a work trade on an organic farm I found through the WWOOF program. I spent the past 9 months there, I've only been back in Ohio for a few weeks now, and very soon after arriving in Oregon, I noticed significant changes in my health just from the fresh organic raw foods I was eating. They still cooked most meals and had plenty of elk meat to eat, so it wasn't until I started meeting friends in Ashland that I began to learn about more healthy lifestyles. A good friend of mine had been a raw foods chef in the Laguna area for a while, and he was the one who turned me on to green smoothies. When I told the woman who owned the farm I was staying at about this, she showed me her copy of Green For Life. Apparantly, the past summer or maybe the summer before that, Victoria Boutenko had bought, actually I don't think she was charged any money, some romaine from her at the Ashland growers market and decided to use it for the cover of the book, so when the book finally was published Victoria gave her a copy to have, thanking her for the lettuce. It was this book that did the convincing for me.
Since I was living at the farm, I still ate whatever they were serving, but I used their cuisinart to make my own smoothies every so often. I had access to all their fresh greens and herbs and fruits, so it was basically heaven. I've been struggling since returning home, so the decision to go raw has been forcing me to make better choices with so much garbage surrounding me. Luckily I found a natural food store not too far, about 25 minutes, that I can get organics and raw foods from. I hope to build community there, and even get a part time job to make things a bit easier. I also got a blender for my 21st birthday last week, so that's been a huge help.
I don't plan on staying in Ohio for much longer than the holidays, and plan on travelling wherever I'm guided. I hope to continue working on other organic farms and meeting as many people as possible. I'm very glad that I found this online community. Between the recipies and shared knowledge it is a wonderful resource. I hope that I can share as much as I've already gained from being here.
