Hi, LJB, I'm in Minnesota, too. I'm still new to raw, though, and haven't made it two months yet, so I haven't been through one of these cold winters yet being raw. I've heard, though, that it's actually easier to stay warm once you're raw because your body is just better at regulating everything, including temperature. I would also like to know what other, more experienced raw fooders have to say about tea. I've heard that it's good and I've heard that it's bad, so there's some confusion there. A nice warm drink that I've found is heated water with some fresh lemon juice and a little agave nectar added. We'll see if it satisfies this winter! Congratulations on two months raw!

I'm just always freezing if it goes below 90. I'm probably not eatting the correct ratio of foods but I bet it is possible to stay raw and be warm. I just put a heater under my desk and I wear gloves and that seems to help. I never thought we should be living in such cold climates because the raw food diet helps a lot when it's really hot out. I heard it was bad to put hot stuff down your throat so I just exercise a lot and try to stay in warm places if I'm inactive.

staying warm

There are only two times that I am warm. 1. When I spend most of my time outdoors and acclimate to the temperature (but that is only in the warm weather - I am still cold most of the time inside) and 2. When I am 100% raw. In New York City I went from being the coldest person on the planet to perfectly comfortable all the time when completely raw. If I am 90% raw I'm still always freezing. Even 99%. When I am completely raw I believe then my body stops having to waste all it's energy and heat digesting. I think this is the case because I am the coldest after eating cooked food.

About tea. Tea is great. You can drink it warm instead of hot if you are worrried about overheating your throat for some reason (whatever that would be?) Warming teas have been essential to my staying raw for any amount of time at all because I run so cold. Both Agave and lemon are cooling so I wouldn't suggest drinking that to stay warm. Hibiscus (which is in a lot of herb tea mixes) is also extremely cooling. The best warming tea I've found is ginger. Another great warmer is miso broth. Just as easy as tea to make and so good. Mildly warmed raw soups are also wonderful. Cayenne sprinkled on food is also great.

Sunshine 13, Nice to know others in MN are raw. This is a challenging time of year for us, with the long winter ahead, but I'm figuring it out. Are you near Northfield? been to Raw food resturant the Ecopolitain?

Yes, I've been to Ecopolitan once and thought it was great. I had the falafel and hummus dish and really enjoyed it. I wish I was able to prepare raw food that was so tasty, but I'm still working on it. I've tried making raw hummus, but with no success. I'm not sure where Northfield is, is it south of the twin cities? I'm north of the cities, up in Princeton. I'd like to go to Ecopolitan again sometime - I wish it wasn't such a long drive for me. It is really nice to know that there are other people in MN that are vegan and even raw. I haven't met any in my area here, and other than my immediate family, haven't even met any other vegans. It can be a little disheartening sometimes, especially because most of the people we meet around here are such hard-core meat eaters. We're already hearing a lot of gunshot around here with hunting season approaching. Quite a challenge to raise vegan kids in a non-vegan world, isn't it? Well worth it, though - I feel so blessed to have found this path.
