To peel or not to peel?

Hi,

Where can I find information on which fruits should be peeled before blending them and which are ok to blend whole? Same with the seeds, should I remove apple, peer, orange and other fruit seeds before blending?
How about papaya, watermelon or cantaloupe? Should I blend seeds or peel them before blending? Just trying to keep all the nutrients in the smoothie instead of throwing them away.
Thanks.

Good question, I have seen videos and read recipes that say to incorporate the rinds or seeds...but I don't know if there is any specifications on this subject. (=

My deliberately practical view on the subject:

Seeds normally have to be soaked in order to get rid of the enzyme inhibitors as talked about so much here on the site - yet - blending should be easy and it's more important to have it fun, easy and delicious so that you eat/drink it. So........... I say that if the seeds are hard to get out and don't make your blend taste bad or gritty - let them be.

I do not for instance remove the seeds from my tomatoes or kiwiws. The fruits are given to us in this form so that they will go whole through our digestive tracts and make new plants far away. That is why the plants give us their nutritious ovums to eat. They want us to take the seeds and distribute them. Seeds cannot digest well without being sprouted, but that is the price we pay for that incredibly luscious and nutritious fruit. It's our deal with the plant world. I have had seeds sprouting within the tomatoes when they are ripe enough though.

The point is to make this thing easy on yourself. The easier it is, the more you will do. If you ever get to the point where you no longer blend and just eat tree-ripened native fruits, then I would re-visit the question as at that point it might make a real difference. For us regular raw foodists, a few unsprouted seeds and peels are part and parcel of our agreement with nature and the ease of our lives.

When you think about what "regular folks" eat and the difference between us and them, it will make those skins and seeds seems more negligible in the scheme of things.

Of course you don't want to eat super thick skins like those of citrus and avocados and watermelon or big easily removed seeds like those of avocados or certain squashes that you can just scoop out with no fuss. Common sense should rule here. Mango for instance has a skin with an irritant that many people are allergic to and which is not pleasant to eat under any circumstances. You see my point I'm sure. You would eat the apple skin, so throw it in. Apples only have a few seeds and picking them out would make using apples extremely difficult so don't bother unless you are very, very sensitive. Apple seeds have a little bit of toxins in them - but I've never heard of a human having a bad time with putting a whole apple in a blender or with juicing the seeds.

Well, I'm repeating myself so I'll stop now,

Greenbunny
