green smoothies

Is it ok to use green smoothies as a meal replacement? There's a fair amount of fruit and greens that go into them so would it be ok to have a smoothie for breakfast and lunch?

yes, that's completely okay. lots of raw foodists do this because as you said most green smoothies are filled with nutrient filled fruits and greens. it's basically eating a salad all blended up, so yes it's okay. as long as you feel great after drinking them, then go right ahead.

Smoothies have been a lifesaver for me. There's not a lot of thought or prep involved. You can experiment with tastes and different foods. They are filling and sooo good for you. Go for it and see how good they are.

Thanks healthyme, and thanks for the post in the welcome forum too.

I've experimented a little with smoothies and I love them. I think they'll be a huge part of my transition to raw.

You said in the other post that they've been a main staple in your diet. Do you use them as meal replacements?

What kinds of greens is everyone using in their green smoothies. So far, I have been using spinach, bananas, and other fruits. Any suggestions?

Green smoothies are great - you can use just about anything here. Kale, parsely, celery. We mix it up here and yes they are filling. I can go all morning until lunch and sometimes beyond without feeling hungry. Get creative and enjoy!

I drink a GS almost every morning - OJ, bananas, spinach or other green, strawberries, etc.

I love it, but would one day like to be able to just eat all my food instead of drinking it.

It's very convenient and all but I think relying on them in the long run wouldn't be as healthy as chewing all your food.

Hi all, my first post here ;0) Im a new raw fooder :0) Ive started green smoothies at the same time as starting to eat raw food, and love them. they feel so healthy. i use any greens so far. kale, parsley, spinach, rocket, lettuce, kiwis, apples along with a whole variety of fruit(not all in one smoothie of course!)

I got inspired by the first book i red on the topic. id highly recomend it. its very interesting and discusses the importence of greens in human diet, be them raw foodists or not. its called "green for life" :0)

speaking of this. im looking to buy a decent blender cause the one i got now i weak, loud and not great. i was thinking either the total blender from blend-tech or the vita mix. anyone know which one is better?

thanks!!

Just to add - I drink a quart of green or regular fruit smoothie for breakfast, so if you are using it for a meal, just make sure you have enough. A regular glass wouldn't make for much of a meal.

As for juice, it's not a great meal replacement because it's been extracted. All the fiber is gone so you are missing a lot of bulk. We drink a carrot/apple juice before working out, but it's not considered a meal.
