Grazing???

Okay so I'm very much a grazer. I just munch on different foods all day long. I've tried making a big salad and eating it all at once, but I just can't do it. Even fruit I eat one piece and I'm full. If I make smoothies I can eat a little more than I normally would if I hadn't blended it, but I still get full rather quickly. I'm thinking this is just how my body works, but my dad tells me I'm not getting enough fat in my diet. (by the way my dad is not a raw fooder, but he is really into health although he tends to binge on junk food every once in awhile and loves to eat a ton of one thing all in one sitting). So I guess I was just wondering what all of your opinions are on this. Is this just how some people eat? Or am I missing something in my diet as my dad says? I do almost always eat some raw nuts and raw coconut oil every day--so to me it seems that I am getting enough fats in my diet.

I've heard a 30 year raw food expert once say that 7 almonds a day is more than enough of an intake of fat. People tend to forget that there is fat in all fruits and vegetables, and yes, even in sweet fruits, there's a small percentage of fat.

So you aren't depleted of fat!

I don't know where people get the crazy idea that they "need" fat as if plants don't contain any fat at all, that they need to eat handfuls of nuts, seeds, spoonfuls of oil, tons of avocados, nut pates, nut butters, flax crackers, etc.

Many folks'll end up overeating fat and not getting enough simple basic plant food like fresh fruits, greens, veggies etc. They'll end up dousing their greens in flax or hemp oil and avocadoes & olives. They end up with 70-80% of their calories in fat running through their blood stream on a daily basis.

Some who overeat raw fat often wonder why they cannot tolerate sweet fruits - it is because there's such a high percentage of fat being processed through their bodies that the sugars from the fruit rise and give them sugar metobolic problems such as excess yeast (candida), hypoglycemia, diabetes symptoms, etc.

So, lol, don't worry about your fat intake! It is fine!

And do eat when you feel hungry. Especially when you start off, you'll feel like you want to eat all the time. Put your salad in a ziploc bag so you can grab some greens & veggies when the feeling strikes. Keep bananas around so you can grab 2-3 when you get a craving. Over time your system will likely regulate where you can eat more and less often.

All the best to you!

thanks doublehelix, you reassured me that what I was doing was right. my dad was giving me doubts when I didn't need to have any. when I tell people that I'm raw they get all worried and assume I'm not getting enough of something or other in my diet. or even when I used to be only vegan or vegetarian they would get worried too. when they do this it gets a few of my feathers ruffled, but at heart I can just tell that what I'm doing is right because it makes me feel better than I've ever felt in my whole life. but you know everyone once in awhile i need someone that's on the same page as me to say yeah, don't worry, what you're doing is a-okay. so thanks! that's why i'm starting to love this little forum! hope i can do the same for someone else once i become more knowledgeable on the subject!

DH answered you pretty thoroughly, with good information.... I'll just throw in that when I am in tune to my body, it tells me what I need. Sometimes it takes a little while to really "hear" it, but once you do, you'll know what it needs and doesn't need. And if grazing makes you feel good and healthy and satisfied, keep doing it!

What people who don't eat raw foods don't understand is that no matter what eating pattern you have (grazing, eating mono meals, eating once or twice a day, etc) raw food is giving you exactly what you need. It's sort of like when babies are born and they eat breast milk.... it's exactly what they need, and their bodies tell them when they need more, they cry and we feed them.

You are welcome rawitup. The one thing I do now that I didn't do when I first started on my raw journey is I mainly keep it to myself, unless the subject comes up, then I say I eat mostly fruits and vegetables. When the word "raw food" comes up people tend to gasp with confusion and wonder where I'm getting my protein, lol!

well we ARE naturally herbivores. we have smaller stomaches than carnivores and have to eat more often than them. any more than 4 or 5 meals a day tho can't be good for your teeth. everytime you eat, your mouth gets acidic. make sure to always wash your mouth with water after eating to neutralize the acid.

how new are you new to the diet? i wouldn't worry about your grazing if you've only been raw a few weeks or a few months. your body is adjusting. it is used to feeling full from cooked food, not raw food, so you constantly feel hungry. fullness from cooked and raw definately feels different and you are digesting raw food more quickly.

when you 1st start the raw diet, you'll want to eat more and that's normal. the good thing (besides how healthy raw is!!) is that your body is dissolving mucous caused by all that cooked food. as more and more mucous from your intestines dissolves, your body will be able to better assimilate nutrients and then you won't feel the urge to eat as much.

when we are hungry it is either because our stomach is completely empty or we are craving nutrients. on cooked food, we definitely don't get enough nutrients, however the food takes so much longer to digest.

so as more and more mucous dissolves, you'll be able to space your meals more.

i know this from personal experience. i was 100% raw for 5 1/2 months once. that's the longest i've gone. it was so easy to fast. i even did dry fasts (no food or even water) and i did not feel hungry at all! before i went raw and also at the beginning of being raw, i would eat a lot tho. but after being raw for awhile, you can eat less and feel satisfied because your body can absorb more nutrients since your intestines aren't covered with mucous that prevents nutrients from getting through.

not only do i know this from personal experience, but i also read about it in some raw food books. "12 steps to raw foods" and also a bit of info i got from david wolfe's book "eating for beauty"

to speed up the process of getting rid of all that mucous, eat lots of mucous dissolving foods like radishes and lemon juice. black radishes are the best, but red radishes are great, too. and you can't go wrong with freshly squeezed juices!

drink lots of water, too, and stay hydrated. being dehydrated can also make you hungry.

don't get discouraged. depending how toxic you were before going raw, it could take more or less time to cleanse your intestines. but grazing raw all day is still healthier than eating cooked food. as long as your grazing period continues tho, just make sure to take really good care of your teeth. i'd recommend toothsoap. anything in the grocery store won't do any good. i've done a lot of research online about taking care of your teeth because when i went raw, i felt as if my teeth were getting weak either from too much citrus or all those larabars. I learned that some of the nasty things they put in toothpaste actually prevent your teeth from repairing themselves. and yes on the raw diet your teeth can repair themselves! you can find some toothsoap here. http://www.fredericpatenaude.com/toothsoap.html
or at least just use plain baking soda which is what i switched to years ago. i don't even trust the "health" brand toothpastes. still too many ingredients. you can also sign up to get free raw newsletters from that site. i get lots of advice and motivation from them.

if you don't think it's too gross and if you can afford it once in awhile, i'd also try getting some colonics for much faster results in clearing mucous out of your body. they're great for when you're fasting, too.

hope you got somethin' from all this. basically, just keep on grazing and your body will adjust and eventually you'll get used to eating fewer meals. i wish you lots of luck and you're already ahead of me cuz i've fallen off the wagon. stay on and stay motivated

wow, that was a very thorough response. yeah, i'm still completely raw and everything you've just said directly correlates to what's happened within the past week. in the beginning of the week i couldn't eat a lot at once and would do the grazing thing. but gradually as the week went on i was eating more at one time and not eating so often. now i usually eat about 4 times a day and i might snack a bit, but i try not to because i know my stomach is digesting food and i need to give it a rest.

i usually only snack if i'm craving some kind of cooked food. which was happening a bit the past few days. i've heard that's a sign your body is getting rid of that type of cooked food. i'm pretty sure that's what was happening because i'm not getting those strong cravings i was about day or two ago. even when i get the cravings though i don't ever want to eat the actual food i'm craving i just automatically go to something raw that will satisfy me because i've really been trying to educate myself on how bad the ingredients in processed foods are and what they do to your body and how bad heating your food at high heats is. i was actually amazed with myself the other day when my dad offered me a chocolate bar and i instantly said no, thanks. whereas before i would have given it a moments thought and then said no. but, nope, i automatically said no. yay! so exciting!

i'm having a problem with getting enough water though. i'm always feeling dehydrated so i'll try to drink a glass or two of water before i eat a meal but then i just have to pee a lot. so i don't know what's going on there. i really need to figure out a way to keep hydrated though cause i'm getting headaches and my mouth is dry a lot. i can also tell i'm dehydrated because sometimes when i wake up in the morning i have sheet wrinkles on my arms and face and that only happens when i'm dehydrated.

oh a note about the mucous. my nose is runny a lot so that's a clear indication i'm getting rid of some. yay for that too.

thanks for the explanations and encouragement. these are the types of things that keep me going. also wishing you the best of luck on your journey. keep it natural and happy, peace.
