Diabetes and Raw Food Eating

Hi Everyone - Any Diabetics out there? If I listened to my doctors I'd probably be dead. They had me eating so many carbs - and then having to take so much insulin to cover it. I then thought I had to take it into my own hands. That is when I discovered Raw Food eating. I've felt so much better and now take 1/2 the amount of insulin I was taking before. I'm just doing breakfast and lunch - Raw - then for dinner cooked with salad or other veggies. I know I need to go more Raw but I'm trying!! Love to hear from anyone dealing with diabetes or high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Bye for Now . Suzyscissorhand

Hello,

I am new to the board and I was just talking to my husb about becoming a 'raw' eater. He is diabetic, but willing to give it a go. Anyways, I hope that you do well with your new Raw venture. Are you a Juvenile or Adult Diabetic? Does ANYONE know--Is it possible to get off the insulin permanently, safely? That sure would be sweet!
Best Wishes

Hi -- I am an adult onset diabetic. I have been 100% raw for six weeks and have not seen any improvement in my diabetes. However, I have read and heard about many who have gotten off their medications with a raw food diet. My impression (as far as my own diabetes) is that you have to give your body time to heal the damage eating cooked and junk food have done to it, so you can allow it to return to a normal, natural state of functioning. I am still giving it time, but I feel so much better I can't imagine not staying with it. I, too, would really like to hear from an actual person that healed their diabetes with raw foods, not just a lot of third party testimonials. Anyone out there who can share their own success?

Hello Everyone:

I am new to this site but I am quite old to diabetes. I am type 2 and trying to control my diabetes through diet and exercise. My A1C varies between 5.5 to 6.5. I was not happy with my last reading of 6.5 so I am venturing into raw diet. I have been a lacto-ovo-vegetarian throughout my life and I am still not ready to be a vegan but my glucometer has convinced me that raw food is much less glycemic than the cooked food. I saw the difference when eating cooked onions as compared to raw. I am 59 years old and last three months have not been bad for me. My sugars have come down to SOME EXTENT after I went to about 70% of my calories coming from Raw. I have lost about 12 pounds in 12 weeks and also have lost some of my very dangerous belly fat. I some times think that may be there is some other reason of my weight loss because loosing weight had always been so hard for me throught my life.

At this time, the only cooked food I eat is tea with little milk ( 2-3 times a day with no sugar) , bread (5 slices a day toasted and some time with extra virgin olive oil), and one serving of cooked vegetables during dinner. During day, I eat many fruits, and raw vegetables. I stay away from Juices. The only processor I have is a knife. I routinely take nuts ( almonds or cashews or walnuts). In my 1800 calries diet, about 450 calries are coming from the nuts.

After about 2 and half months of diet change, I feel better although, I am worried whether it will stay like this or not. My next A1c is due at the end of January 2008 when I will know how this diet has affected my diabetes. But my home testing has shown some improvements but not lot. My weight is down and blood pressure is lower; hovering at 105/65.

hey durejakk welcome! sounds like you're on the right path. everything you're doing is great. just one thing about the bread eaten everyday. our bodies aren't made to digest wheat products and this can be very toxic to the body and cause much unneeded stress to the body. so it is better to cut out grains completely from your diet. it makes a huge difference and i bet if you did that you would see a major change in your health for the better.

if you're going to eat bread on a regular basis at least make sure it is made from sprouted whole grains and has no added sugar. one such brand is ezekiel brand bread that you can buy at whole foods stores.

just listen to what your body is telling you and you'll do great. well i wish you the best of luck and hope to see you around the forum!

There was a documentary filmed called "Raw for 30 Days" which followed a group of diabetics going on a raw food program and a month later they were insulin free, many of them still no longer diabetic, off insulin, even a year later.

I don't know if the documentary is available yet, but elements of this is on the DVD "Raw For Life".

Besides addressing issues of diabetes and general health, there is a lot of solid information about transitioning to a raw food lifestyle, recipes, and more, with interviews with people like Tony Robbins, David Wolfe, Gabriel Cousens, even the guy from the movie Super Size Me. It is a fascinating DVD.

Information on "Raw for 30 Days" can be found at: http://rawfor30days.com/

Information on the DVD "Raw for Life" can be found at: http://rawforlifedvd.com/dvd/dvd.html

Hello I am a diabetic also

Hello,
It is good to see this thread. I am a Type 2 diabetic also and at this point I am starting out with trying to add more fruit and veggies to my diet and cut down on more of the carbs. I am looking forward to following this thread and seeing how everyone is doing with this lifestyle. I am working on it!! Is there anyone else on Metformin also? Well I am looking forward to talking to everyone.

Hi Suzyscissorhand,
I"m diabetic type2. As long as I stay raw I'm off all medication. When I slip with fmaily pressure...my numbers go high. One thing I have learned from Dr.Joel Furhman is eating green will bring the numbers under control. You can get his book Eat To Live very reasonably from Amazon.com or sometimes better at Alibris.com . there are Dr's out there that now will state very clearly that a "green" diet will help reverse many diseases.. I wish you the best! You can make your life alot better with a raw lifestyle!
MeadowLark....livingproof except on the days that I sneak what I know better than to eat.
