18 Days of better health

It's hard to believe that I've only been doing this for 18 days and i feel so much better and I have learned so much! I am still transitioning and so I still eat some cooked foods, and a little bit of protien. Well, tonight I had some salmon and rice with my raw broccoli, and then felt completely lousy! So I made a smoothie with some carrot, ginger, and bananas. I'm already starting to react to cooked foods maybe? I don't know, but I sure felt a lot better once i started drinking the smoothie!

I've been eating a small amount of cooked foods daily, although I don't have as much desire for them as time goes on. I go to my new doctor on Wednesday, so we'll see what he says about my overall health and the choices I'm making. Supposedly this practice is very holistic.

Hi Melissa, it was great to read that. i can relate to it all!

Do you live on yr own (as in do you have others to consider in feeding?!)

i still eat some cooked food at the moment, which is OK with me as i want to make this transition slow and so hopefully lasting (i've learnt from experience that jumping straight into something just doesn't work for me!) i'm just wondering how i'm going to phase it out completely (eventually) when my partner and son will definitely not want to join me!

Am curious to know what the doctor said. Do doctors believe in holistic?

Hi bekuchan!

Yes, i have others to consider feeding. There is another thread somewhere here that I say that I still make cooked food for my family.... which had some people surprised! I love to cook, and now "uncook" food, so it isn't much of a problem for me. I still eat some cooked food, but I make things for my family that I don't eat. I find that some things I can sneak into their diet and they don't realize it, other things I just eat and they ask for it, or I offer it, or whatever. I think it's easier for me because I've always been a bit of a "crunchy" in terms of our food choices. I make as much as i can from scratch, and we have never eaten the typical diet that most people do. I also find that if I force foods they will turn their noses up, but if I just provide food that looks, smells, and tastes good, they will eat it.

I've never made food an issue with my kids, I just make sure they have plenty of good foods to eat. I have 3 children, ages 16, 14, and 13. The 16 year old recently went to live with his dad, so I don't feed him daily anymore. They don't eat well there, but i can't do anything about that. My boyfriend has a pretty good diet, although he's a big meat eater. He doesn't eat junk food, and is willing to try just about everything I put in front of him. He was too thin (unhealthy) when i met him, and put on 15 pounds in the first year we were together. Now he's normalized his weight and is in a healthy range and doesn't get as sick as he used to. My kids are healthier than most teenagers. I know that the younger you introduce them to a healthy diet, the more likely they are to embrace it. Although that can also work against you as they tend not to want processed food once you've gotten them used to the good stuff. The first time I bought spaghetti sauce in a jar and served it they all turned their noses up. I assured them people all over the world ate it and it wouldn't kill them. They insisted that it smelled funny. So if you get them used to REAL food, they may not go back!

I didn't jump right into raw eihter, i have taken it slow. It works for me very well, and I don't feel "pressured" to eat from a certain list. I just eat the things that make me feel good, and aid in my healing.

My new doctor was pretty good. Not as good as my chiropractor, who is extremely supportive and holistic. My general practitioner was pretty supportive of my going raw, although he said I didn't have to be so.... I think the word was puritanical.... to be healthy He wasn't being negative or anything, it was pretty funny! He has a nurse practitioner who is extremely holistic, and wants me to see her in a few weeks, once i get my chiropractic care going so that I'm healing. Most practitioners won't diagnose fibromyalgia, nevermind agree that you should use holistic approaches to healing. So I'm pretty comfortable with this doctor and he is supportive of my beliefs.

Ok, time to watch the World Series... GO SOX!!!!!

Melissa

That's my experience, although there are others that have different ways of going about it. You have to do what works best for you and your family.

Hi Melissa

How was the game?

It's good to hear that yr doctor had a good sense of humour and seemed pretty cool! i've heard fibromyalgia mentioned a lot in relation to people going raw but have only been able to grasp bits and pieces of what it actually is... may be time to Wiki it. It sounds pretty full on though, so it's great that yr feeling so much better in such a short while.

i do completely agree with you about letting kids make their own choices. Even though i was vegan, i left the choice to my son and he chose to become vegan when he was 6. He's now 11, eats brilliantly (maybe a bit too fond of the treats - although as greenbunny pointed out, with raw treats it's no longer a bad thing: he'll think it's the best decision i ever made!!) and is open to try new things, so i'm sure, like you said, that he won't pass up a tasty looking raw option!

My partner has offered to do most of the cooking, especially while i practise new recipes. He's been great. He's vegan too (was vegan when i met him) and likes salads to accompany other things, so i think he'll be up for trying my experiments aswell.

Let's just hope i don't put them off eh?

Haha, i've always been a cruncher too - when chopping veg to cook with, i'd end up eating so much that i wasn't as hungry for dinner. My son and partner would tell me off for not eating enough.

Thanks for the reply and happy healing

Hi Bek!

Sorry I missed this reply until now. Probably all of the euphoria from the Red Sox winning the World Series

Fibromyalgia is sort of the result of your body not functioning well. It's not like MS, although it resembles it in some of it's symptoms. My entire body is in pain all the time. My muscles ache, my joints ache, I have digestive issues, I'm exhausted all the time.

The reason that a raw diet helps (apart from the fact that raw is good for everyone!) is that a raw diet eliminates most inflammatories. I began by eliminating wheat, then all gluten, and most recently, dairy and beef. I never really ate any processed foods, so that was never an issue. Raw was a really logical path for me...

How are all of your raw uncooking experiments going???

Hey ladies
I wanted to join in with the convo because I too am cooking foods for a family. I have 4 children and a cooked hubby so I def know how you feel. I am cruhchy as well when it comes to what I will put in front of everyone but their for sure not raw at this point. In fact I am just finishing up my first week 100% raw and omg do I feel fab. I just, I cant even put into words.
I feel ya on the sneeking things into their food. Tonight they had fresh fish with brown rice and for the veggie I made a killer carrot, apple, raisen salad with a homemade apple carrot almond sauce , it was so awesome. They loved it. I also had sushi with my own recipie for the fill, which was so incrediable I cant even explain, while I wasnt even through one peice and they wanted some..lol..so of course I shared...*smiles*
I would say between their all fruit brekkie and their all raw veggies, their bout 40% raw and dont even know it...teehee
lol
anyway , just wanted to let you know that Iam on the same page as well.
oh and I totally agree about letting the kids set their own food limits. I am all on that.

Hi Pheen!

You know, I'm one of those people that firmly believes in life being a journey.... and some days I feel like I'm gliding along, and other days it's like a hike up Mt. Fuji! I feel like my health has to take priority for lots of reasons, but hopefully when I put everything in my life together, the package is a whole person who is on the right track.

My family is not only supportive, but very open to eating healthy food and trying new things. I think it's great that they wanted to try your sushi! We have cooked food and whatever kind of snacks around, but if my youngest has a choice, she goes to the freezer and gets shakes that I have made into "icees" for her. Her favorite is pina colada.

Glad to have you here, glad you've found raw and it's working so well for you.....
