I tried the greens smoothie someone posted here with bananas and oranges and kale. Except I didn't have oranges, so I used carrot/apple juice, ginger, cinnamon, and bananas along with some kale. I don't have a vitamix, and it just came out grainy and not a very nice color either. I was thinking spinach might be a little easier on my plain old blender, I think I'll try that next. I haven't tried parsley in a smoothie, but it sounds good. I just picked up some ground hemp seed, so I think I'll add some of that today for some protien.

Does anyone else have a blender that works well and isn't so cost prohibitave as a vitamix? I won't be getting one of those for awhile.

Thanks

I dad chard instead of kale (kale makes me really sick anyways) and I don't eat banannas so I had to skip on those and only had one orange. So... basically I ended up making my own recipe! But yours helped in the creation!!

Greenbunny - I did it in a regular blender and I ended up chewing a couple pieces since it's pretty chunky. But I didn't mind it

Thanks RawHippie

Okay I have a regular blender as well and I think I have figured out how to get rid of the chunkiness:

A) You may need more water.
B) In terms of the blender, I blend it once and when everything looks blended - I stop the blender. I'll let the stuff settle for about 15-30 seconds and then start blending again. Usually everything re-blends and then there aren't much chunks.

Great tip, thank you! It still didn't work too well with the kale. I wonder if i could soak it overnight to soften it? It worked really well with both spinach and parsley, which I think aren't as thick and rough.

I know Kale is good for me, but I am having a hard time getting it down so I thought a smoothie would be great. I'll just keep at it!

The way to soften kale is with celtic sea salt. You rub it on the kale and let it marinate (so to speak). There is a great kale recipe in Gabrielle Cousen's recipe book. That's where I learned to make it soft with salt.

Dear Snow Bunny:

Try this recipe: spinach, 1 bosc pear, 1 cup of water.

Place spinach and bosc pear in blender. Add water a half a cup at a time. Taste. If needed, add the other half. You may want to add some more water. It depends upon you.

my favorite "green smoothie" and bonobos

Hi,

I just quickly skimmed through this thread.

For the person who posted this:

"The closest primate is not the chimpanzee actually. It's another that the name of which escapes my mind at this moment."

I believe our closest primate is the bonobo, although I could certainly be proven wrong This is based on a program I saw on tv several years ago.

For the person looking for green smoothie recipes, I don't know if mine qualifies as a "green" smoothie, but this is what I make every day:

Kefir - about 4 to 6 oz
a handful of blueberries or some other berries
if I have bananas around I add one or half of one
1/2 scoop whey protein powder
1/2 to 1 tbsp of my favorite green superfood powder
12 - 20 drops organic liquid lo han sweetener

When I get my bee pollen in the mail from the Raw Guru store, I'll be adding a tablespoon or two of that.

Cheers!

Gail

If you have a wheatgrass juicer you can juice parsley or wheatgrass and add some to your smoothies. It is not as expensive as a vitamix, and for the people above talking about chewing greens and jaw size: I'm glad for these tools that do help us to not have to depend solely on our malnourished depleted energy of deprived generations of unhealthy foods from our predecessors.

We have a regular blender too and use kale a lot. We never soften it (but you certainly can), we just tear it into smaller pieces and toss it in. However, we do NOT use the thick center stem. That's really tough.

I make a green smoothie too:
1 cup water
1 cup spinach
1/2 cup cilantro (or less, however much you want)
1/2 T agave

I've been reading it's really best on your digestive system to not mix fruits and vegetables, so I use agave instead of fruit to sweeten it (it's really bitter without some kind of help).
