Sprouting!

Does anyone sprout? What do you sprout and what do you make with your sprouts when they're done?

Well.... to answer my own question I've been dabbling in sprouting beans for a small bit now. I've sprouted adzuki beans, green lentils, dupuis lentils and chicpeas. The chicpeas had a funny smell to them when they were done so I didn't eat them, but I love sprouted dupuis lentils the best because they have a lovely bit of peppery taste to them and they sprout quite easily.

I've only made dip with my sprouts but I also eat them like crisps.

I've heard that they are super good for you too but I always screw it up and get a bunch of mold.

Have you ever sprouted sunflower seeds? I find that they're easy to sprout, and I've used them as salad toppings, mixed with ground sun-dried tomatoes and spices and then dehydrated (they're a great snack that way), and they're also good in things like cookies and bars made in the dehydrator. Buckwheat is also easy to sprout and can be made into cookies, bars, crackers, etc. I've used them in a cinnamon bun recipe, too, from Alissa Cohen's raw food book, and those turned out really good. (If you don't have the book and want the recipe, I'd be happy to give it to you). I'm still pretty new to sprouting, though, and a lot of things I've sprouted haven't turned out. I've tried making hummus with sprouted garbanzo beans, but it didn't taste very good. Too bad, I love hummus. Anybody out there have any tips for making raw hummus?

Yeah I had a whole year long science project of sprouting sunflower seeds and I eventually got sick of them cuz I kept eating the project when it was done. Hummus would be really good!!!!! I don't have a dehydrator but thanks anyway sunshine you are pretty cool!!!! I don't know where to buy all those seeds though other than the grainery in the bird seed section and I ??m not kidding!!! lol Thanks anyway!

I'm anxious to learn how to sprout. I especially want to grow and juice wheatgrass. I'm learning that you can't put wheatgrass in a regular juicer, blender or Vita-Mix as it will clog. Does anyone have any info. on these juicers? THX

i love sprouted seeds and beans but have never had a go myself - yet! i've read about putting them in a jam jar with some water and covering the top with material secured with a rubber band. (This lets the water drain off.) Then change the water every day and rinse the beans a little and they should sprout in a few days - apparently!

sunshine13, my 1st question on here was about hummus! i love it too! SnowBunny posted a recipe for hummus made with courgette and pine nuts, which sounds amazing.

i have to admit i was wondering whether sprouted chickpeas could be used for hummus....

I have an "Easy Sprout" sprouter and it's so easy to use I really love it. It's only about $12 and is probably the easiest sprouter you can get. I use it every week to sprout a salad mix. I'll be trying it for broccoli soon. I highly suggest going this route.

This sound really awesome.... the "easy" part is what caught my eye

So I looked at the website.... I guess the Easy Sprout is the Sprouter, and the Keeper is the thing you use in the fridge? Does it work? Is it better than keeping them in paper towels and then in a container? That's what I do now and it's not always completely effective.

Thanks for your info....

Melissa
