durian

I want to try durian but I have it in my head that it's going to taste like garlicy musy onions. But then some people say they love it and they freeze it and make ice cream. I'm pretty open to eating obscure food but the smell might just turn me off and I don't want to waste it. What does durian taste like actually and does it blend well with any other fruit?

It's totally not garlicy mushy onions. Why would people make garlic ice cream? lol. It's smooth and creamy and sweet. Yum.

i haven't tried it (never even saw it in person in the market yet)

i think this is rawfoodist frederic patenaude's favorite fruit--perhaps something under his website (see this website's raw food links)

The Durian

Written by David Klein

Durian, the legendary tropical fruit of Oceana,
is considered by many to be the ultimate eating
experience. Covered with a thick brown spiky husk,
it resembles a bizarre medieval football.

However, the treasure that lies within is out
of this world!

Durians are mainly available in the U.S. and
Europe from inner-city Asian food stores. If
your Asian grocer does not recognize the name
durian, ask for it by the name of its most
popular variety grown in Thailand, "monthong."

Durians typically arrive frozen from Thailand.

A good durian has a light fruity aroma, but a
durian which has a repulsively noxious aroma
may still be good to eat. The husk may he
decomposing and releasing sulfurous gases,
giving it the characteristic rotten egg aroma.

But don't give up--ecstasy resides within!

When its frozen theres virtually no smell, its only when it sits and becomes room temperature that it gets that unmistakable durian smell. Also, i think it depends on the Durian because it seems like the last few I've had have had virtually no smell. Either way, smell or not, the taste is a creamy, slightly sweet piece of heaven.

couldnt even try it

I've heard that people love it...buuut, I couldn't even take a bite , I had to spit it out and suck on a lemon for half a day...I don't see how people say it's fruity and sweet...was there something wrong with mine (it tasted as bad as it smelled...and it smelled baad!)

and: does the taste grow on you, like do you have to get used to them or something?

No it doesn't grow on you. My first time was great! lol Mine was fresh and it didn't even smell that bad. I was worried about that but was pleasently suprised when I cut it open. I must have been lucky though because I don't know that much about them.
