Question Raw Cats

Does anyone feed their cats raw? I've been thinking about trying one day. I'm not too keen on handling meat though. Right now she eats Paul Newman's dry cat food, that she loves and is very healthy but I wonder if I can do better by her.

I don't have much input but I have been thinking about this, too. We have four cats and they eat both dry and canned (Science Diet). My oldest guy, Norton, is 15 1/2 years old and has been taking thyroid medication for about 2 years now (over-active). Now that I know more about medications and their side effects, I'm wondering how I can do something different for him and have him stop taking the medication. Maybe raw is the answer but how do you know what's best for animals when they can't tell you how they're feeling?

Exactly how I feel! She really likes her food, I don't know what she would want! I don't want to make her sick by giving her both kinds, I keep reading that is bad.
Well, if either one of us makes the jump, let's tell the results please!!

I wanted to feed my dogs raw but having been vegetarian for almost all my life, I am really not keen on handling raw meat! *gag* I even read a book about feeding dogs raw foods and how great it is... At least I try to give my dogs some raw fruits and veggies. They even love green smoothies!

raw cat meat is delicious. joke.
the cats are in need of protien and their carnivorous tendencies will get the best of them. Let them run free.

My cat eats fruits and vegetables but I still feed her canned fish like tuna and deviled ham. If I didn't feed her meat she'd probably bring it home herself.

I've been researching feeding my cats raw as well. The New Natural Cat by Anitra Frazier is a wonderful resource for a cat's general health and diet. If you feed them raw, it's really important to get the right amount of protein/fat/organ meat, and there's a big controversy about bones (whether to include bones in the cat's diet or not) right now. If you check out www.naturesvariety.com, they have a lot of information about canine/feline health and diet, as well as nutritionally complete raw food products. I have not tried them yet, but know of someone who transitioned her cat slowly over to this food and it has been a positive experience. The food on the pricey side, but personally I'm hoping to prevent large vet bills in the future.

If you want to know more about pet food in general and all the horrible things companies put in it, I recommend Food Pets Die For and Protect Your Pet by Ann. M. Martin. The latter of the two focuses on pet health in general (immunizations, etc). This book also talks about a raw diet, but does not condone it, so if want a opinion on the other side of the issue, this might be a valuable resource. I hope this information is helpful to everyone!

Raw Cats

Hi Guys,

I have a great story about my 13 year old Burmese. The short of it is this. 7 years living in the country eating free range rabbits and some tinned fish - to moving to the city, at age 9 through a 'vet's advice putting her on senior blend dried cat food and tinned food. Around 18 months down the track I figured she needed her natural diet, raw meat, actually cats like the whole of their kill. I offered her fresh meat which she used to love and lo and behold she refused it. 6 months go by and her breath is smelling something shocking.

I noticed her personality changing becoming fearful, agitated, whingey, with bad breath, dull coat, gunk in the eyes, loss of interest in playing.

Vet's answer cranky old age!!!!! Then she gets sick. Gum disease subsequent teeth removal (6) and $670.00 Aus. vet bill. I noticed a poster of a smiling dog at the vets showing owners how to clean their teeth! How absurd!

I took action fast! I removed the dry food that was slowly killing her, rotting her teeth, destroying her kidneys and aging her fast. That stuff is so addictive. It took 2 weeks of tantrums and refusal before her taste for her natural diet returned!!!!! Vet's are selling Science Brand someone mentioned here big bucks profit for them. They make money out of performing surgeries on dogs and cats as young as 4 with cancer, kidney failure, and so on. It is saddening and sickening what is happeing to our pets.

I am 100% raw vegan have been for 6 years. I feed my cat and new dog on raw and nothing else.

And I have to tell you the change in my cat has been nothing short of miraculous. No gunk in the eye, throwing up any more, her coat glistens,, she's like a born again kitten, plays, AND HER BREATH IS pleasant not to mention the change in her wellbeing. She is affectionate, contented and interested in life again, How good is it to hear her crunching organic chicken necks again. I have written articles for magazines here on this.

We all love our pets to bits. But, seriously no one fed their pets dry food and expensive grain based and recycled animal parts tinned food when I was a kid. Circa 1950's. And pets lived long er too. We certainly weren't taking our cats to the vets when I was a kid to have teeth removed or to treat chronic gingivitis.

and read about our puppy and how he not only thriving on raw but what he is actually having. Meaty bone, chicken wings, necks and carcasses, all organic and a little avo, apples, and other raw fruit and veg. but mainly raw meat and bones. He just shines. People gravitiate to his beautiful natured personality.

No wet patches under the eyes that the vet also said was 'normal'.

It's a long post, I know. check out the whole story at
