Raw food for babies
Hi there I am new to raw foods and am just starting out myself. I also have a 7 month old daughter and am wondering how to go about intoducing her to raw food since she doesn't have teeth. I am breastfeeding and have started her on cooked, pureed vegitables and rice/barley cereals and am wondering if there is a better way to start her off early on the raw food diet. I have read from one source that recommends breastfeeding soley for the first 2 years until teeth are well developed and then starting on raw food diet. This is a little too extreme for me as I woudl think by then she will be too picky to try out a variety of foods. I don't want to wait until she has teeth to introduce her to solids. Any ideas???

hi heather,
how is the raw pregnancy going? i don't have kids yet but maybe some day. i've been raw for two years and thinking about being raw during a pregnancy is daunting. i'm nervous that i wouldn't be providing both of us with all the nutrition we neec, but i know somewhere in there is western medicine talking lol. anyway, hope you are well and would love to hear how things are going, what you're doing, what kind of dr. you are seeing (western or naturopath)
in good health

newly raw, newly pregnant
I am starting a raw food lifestyle in part because I am pregnant. I began the diet a week before I found out, but now I am even more motivated to continue with it. In transition, I eat some cooked vegan foods, and i notice a stiff, bloated feeling in my abdomen when I eat cooked foods, as well as a decrease in energy. Better digestion has got to be good for the baby, living inside the body right next to my own delicate systems.
I read that greens are an excellent source of iron and calcium, important for blood supply and formation of babys nails and teeth during the 9th an d 10th weeks. My problem with greens was that many of them, especially kale juice, give me heartburn. Strange, eh? I find that a light drizzle of miso dressing on mixed greens or spinach is good for digestion, as well as pairing lettuces with citrus, which helps the body absorb more calcium.
and no matter what I eat, brisk morning walks and lots of sunshine help me feel great every day. Eat to live! If you can do the things you have always loved doing while on a new diet, and feel great, then you are doing it right.

Hi! Well... before being pregnant I was like 110% raw and now am around 95%...so I guess not too bad. I was worried for awhile because everything is just so wierd when you're pregnant and food cravings are unbelievable! I'm not worried about getting enough nutrition. But. I've found the only things I crave non-raw are "protein" type foods (tofu, beans&rice, etc) so I do wonder a little bit about that. That and I have yet to find someone who stayed completely raw while pregnant. I won't see a doctor ever! (ok, in dire emergency...lol) I am seeing a midwife and she says I'm doing great and am quite healthy. I also think it's important to take a lot of superfoods so I do that as well.

young coconut water and green smoothies are excellent for babies, and they don't require any chewing

I've known a bunch of people that have had raw pregnancies or told me about people that they have known. The first thing is that the babies don't come out all gooey. They are clean, more aware and less traumatized. Secondly, the births that I have been around were miraculous. The babies just popped out. No pain. I don't know if they are all like that, but that's what I know. Thought you young ladies might want to know.

that is great to know as there have been more conversations in my home about having a baby. we're not sure when, but i do know i want to continue being raw during and after with the baby. some of my concerns had been seeing a doctor, as i prefer never to do that either (of course unless it's an emergency) so it's good to know the route you took, elsaraw.
i'm glad to hear you're doing well, and glad to hear the better end result with birth, greenbunny. this helpls with my decision as to whether or not to have kids.
peace
