water fast

well! day 3 of the water fast.I am doing this with a gal who is diabetic.she is checking her blood sugar count often.she hopes she can get off insulin.i am poking along-i read that after 2 days, your hunger goes away.my friend tells me it is 3 days.i only wanted to do 3 days but she wants to do ten days.10 days of water fasting,i guess =30 days of juice fast. i am going to take smooth move today.an herbal tea.well wish me luck. i am so hungry.i see why u need prayer to do this.i felt ok the first day.then day 2 a bit shaky when i went on my long hike.then today-well.i was thinking a 3 day fast but i am game with the friend i am doing this with.she wants to do ten days.whew! seems long.ok,any tips would be fine and helpful.thanks taylor

Taylor, I can't imagine going on a water fast as a diabetic. How often is she checking her blood sugar? Sounds very dangerous and unnecessary to me. I would never do it if I were diabetic or let anyone I know who is diabetic do that. I'd be worried about during the night when temperature and blood sugar go down. Don't let her ever be alone while doing this please. There are better ways to deal with auto-immune diseases and especially diabetes that aren't so risky and that are quick. Had to say it. Best of luck supporting your friend. Ultimately it is her choice but man, would I be putting up a fuss.

I did a month long water fast once and I was hungry every single day of that fast. Everyone told me 2 or 3 days. I kept waiting and waiting. You might not be able to do your normal hiking. I know I could never do hiking or my regular exercise (except yoga) when doing any kind of fast. I mostly rested and meditated when fasting. That's one of the reasons why I don't fast any more. It's a big comittment. Good luck with it.

diabetic

well-she made it thru the fast.longer than me.she has diabeties 1.i have been watching her and so scared.other raw foodist seem to know of people who have had it and were cured.this gal was then eating 2oo calories a day and exercising alot in the day.alot!! well-she is not loosing.i too agree greenbunny-so scary. i have tired and tried to say i don't agree and keep asking her if she is ok.that is all i can really do.thank u for your response.i have dealt with alot of diabetics being a caregiver.but i am new to raw foodists so i don't know for sure what is correct in this world.so anyway-i always ask her how she is.in fact, several times a day. i thank u for your voice of sanity cause i know what i know-and that is in the medical world but not in the raw food world.taylor

diabetes

hello taylor,
i am new to this group. our extremely healthy 7 year old daughter was recently diagonised with type 1 diabetes which came as quite a shock for us. her diet always consisted of whole organic foods with a good part of it raw. did you say there were documented cases of type 1 being reversed? I know there are many for type 2 but have not come across any for type 1. any info you can share will be helpful.
thank you ~R

I agree that it sounds difficult to water fast as a diabetic. But I guess if it can be done safely, more power to her!

Diabetes

Hi Taylor,

I've been away for awhile - sorry took so long to respond.

Diabetes is an auto-immune disease where the immune system attacks the pancreas. A pancreas's ability to keep sugar levels stable is impaired. The pancreas is part of the hormonal system which is responsible for dictating body weight as well as sugar metabolism. I am not a doctor, but have studied the mechanisms of the the immune system, diabetes, hypoglycemia and sugar metabolism in general. Starving the body will only make weight problems worse as the body goes into starvation/hold onto everything it can mode and if the hormonal system is even more debilitated by a pancreas under attack a low calorie diet and extreme exercise will only exasperate the problem. Blood sugars can lower quickly and drastically with exercise.

As great as raw organic foods are, when it comes to diabetes the healing factors have more to do with consistency and balance of a different grouping of food types. You can be raw and organic and address diabetes properly, but you can also be raw and organic and make yourself much worse. The food groups that need to be balanced with diabetes are 1. carbohydrates (which includes veggies and fruits) 2. protein (which includes soaked nuts and seeds, raw eggs and raw fish) 3. fat (balancing omega 3and omega 6 fatty acids).

You see, the point is to give the poor pancreas a break. If you keep a steady stream (4-5 meals a day) of these in proper balance and cut out all high glycemic foods (processed pasta, coffee, caffeinated teas, breads, fruit smoothies, anything at all with sugar (including fructose, honey, agave etc.) then the pancreas is given the time to heal. It is under attack and if it has to work too hard because of lack of food or the wrong foods or the wrong combination of foods it never gets time to heal itself and can't deal with much of anything.

The right combining of these types of foods provides for the pancreas's more immediate needs with the carbos (but can't be an instant onslaught like a smoothies with an amount of fruit you could never eat if it weren't mashed up and too much fructose all at once that goes too quickly into the blood stream); and then you have protein and fat which take much longer to process and provide for longer term energy needs. It's vitally important to provide fat and protein in the case of diabetes. That's the key. And do it in the right amounts!

The zone diet books are a great place to learn more about this. The information inside can easily be adapted to accomodate an organic vegan or a live food diet.

Your friend needs to get more informed about her condition and think more clearly about what she is doing to herself. Both fasting and extreme exercise without diligent awareness of blood sugar levels could put her into a diabetic coma. You have reason to be concerned about her. She might come out ok, but why on earth would someone want to take that kind of chance? I wonder if she is trying to hurt herself for some reason or if she is just a product of the American media.

You might want to tell her that she has a much better chance of losing weight if she is nice to her pancreas and gives it what it needs. If she can keep her blood sugars stable and doesn't eat processed sugars or carbs she will heal and lose weight. Fat is a way of the body telling us that it is not getting what it needs.

I wish you and your friend all the best,
Greenbunny

I have read many success stories dealing with those who adopt a raw foods diet and end up ending their suffering of diabetes. This makes sense if the main thing is to put less stress on the pancreas--because raw foods, which contain the enzymes they are supposed to, are more easily digested and put less stress on the pancreas.

Where are these people? I keep hearing third party testimonials but I have yet to be able to find a diabetic who has cured their diabetes with a raw food diet. I am HOPING this is true, but, as they say, show me the money!
