Amazed Hypoglycemia, pounding stomach

I am starting a raw diet after I have tried every other healing regime I could find over 10 years. My biggest health problem is severe reactive hypoglycemia, there are many things I simply cannot eat without having to deal with the effects for at least a week, including hunger pains, emotional instability, inability to concentrate, weakness and fatigue.
I have eaten raw or mostly raw for 2 weeks now and there are days when I felt great but my hypoglycemia is now very bad and I don't know what to eat - i feel at my wits end. I have been eating eggs, cooked and uncooked for some kind of grounding, but even these aren't helping any more. Anybody know if raw food can make hypoglycemia worse?

so that means you don't get enough sugar? eat fruits. if you don't eat the right type of raw foods it'll get worse. just like if you don't eat the right type of cooked food it'll get worse.

don't eat raw eggs.
what does your diet currently consist of?

I had that problem too, to the point I could absolutely not go raw, despite my every desire and interest. Many people also suggested I eat a lot of fruit / natural sugars, and I found that compounded the problem for me.

What I learned from talking about my experiences with David Wolfe, is that many of us are very nutrient deficient even if we've been eating a healthy diet, simply because of any unhealthy ways we ate and also from the soil's nutrients being depleted - even when eating organic.

The other thing he said is that I needed to eat more protien.

So, he recommended eating a lot of superfoods (I'll detail shortly) for the extra nutrient oomph, and then things like hemp powder to help with the protien, suggesting to start with 1 Tbsp hemp powder every 2 hours.

This was AMAZING. I took the superfoods daily for a few weeks, then dropped them down to a couple times a week, and now I more or less do them once a week and feel fine. (Just an intiutive thing in terms of how much to do when.) For the protien, I didn't exactly follow his instructions, but did take a lot of protien powder, again daily, and over time I felt that reducing the quantity was fine.

Before this, if I had a raw breakfast and morning snack, I was into a hypoglycemic crash and emotional chaos by lunchtime. Supplementing with fruit, such as a banana, only made things worse. It took a week or more to recover from.

But after the superfood + protien power play, I was able to go nearly entirely raw within about 6 weeks.

The "nearly entirely" part has to do with the protien - I know what people say about protien and "our real protien needs" when eating raw (such as the USDA saying we need about 70g protien but on raw one should only need about 35g), but my reality is that I need more like 80-100 grams protien, which is really hard to get from a raw vegan source without overloading on fats. So I supplement with soy milk, tofu, seitan and things like that, in addition to hemp powder. I try to eat less of the cooked vegan things and more of the raw vegan sources .... but it's just not enough and I get seriously whacked in no time at all.

Just offering it FWIW since you might have a problem with that too.

Another thing with the fruit is that I found I was really sensitive to sweet fruit, but could handle sub-acid and acid fruits (e.g. no bananas but berries & oranges are fine). I asked about this months ago and Double Helix was so kind as to post detailed info about what fruit is what classification - it's in this thread (http://www.rawfoodchat.com/forums/ra...tion-1227.html).

Ok, so for the superfoods, they are considered things like maca, bee pollen, goji berries, cacao, and green superfoods (and I'm sure there's a couple more I'm forgetting). There are a lot of green superfoods out there, the one I use (which seems to be the most highly recommended) is Pure Synergy. I also use maca, goji berries and cacao as part of my "superfood blend".

Start off with small quantities with the maca and Pure Synergy - about 1/2 tsp of maca and 1 tsp of PS, and work up to more. I generally only use about 2 tsp of Maca (unless I'm tired and need a pick-me-up, then I use 1 Tbsp in water that I sip throughout the day), and 1 Tbsp of PS.

To start out with this program, I used a Hemp Shake (Amazaon Acai is my favorite, but the chocolate and berry are good), add some extra hemp powder, add the maca, PS, goji, cacao, and some water, and blend up for breakfast. I still do the same thing a lot now, but to get the additional protien boost I often use soy milk as well. (Yeah, even with all the protien in that it's hard to get the ~30g I need per meal doing strict raw vegain - honestly, still haven't been able to figure out how!!)

I hope that helps.

Oh, another thing I wanted to mention is that I try to get enough "carby" (not starchy) vegetables in every single meal.

Leafy greens, celery, cucumber, and various other things are very good for us to eat but don't have many carbs, and carbs are what we need for energy.

I'm not talking "starchy" vegetables like beans, corn or potatoes, but what I call "carby" veggies, veggies that have some carbs, like tomatoes, onions, bell peppers.

I actually use an online nutrition tracking program and enter my foods to make sure I'm getting enough carbs (and other things), especially since I don't eat a whole lot of fruit. I try to get at least 100 net carbs every day in the form of mostly veggies and some fruit.

I know theoretically one should not have to pay attention to such things when doing a raw diet, just eat what you're hungry for, but I find that it's really necessary and helpful to me - it's way too easy to be off by just a smidge of enough that I start getting mind-numb and having a hypoglycemic crash.

Starchy veggies are probably fine for you to eat - I avoid them as they tend to provoke a blood sugar rise and crash in myself which is related to my hypoglycemia, (and then tend to make me gain weight).

Anyway, there are a lot of free online sites that help you track your food, if you're interested in doing that.
