Fruit Question

I have a simple picture list of fruits and which are sweet, sub-acid and acid, but wanted to find a complete and thorough list - I've not been able to find one that is in agreement.

My biggest issue appears to be with sweet fruits, and my list shows grapes, rasins, and bananas as the only sweet fruits.

Other sites have listed such things as apples too, but I do fine with apples. On my list apples are in the same sub-acid category as stone fruit like cherries, peaches, and plums.

I do understand melons are a separate category unto themselves.

I really want to find some way to help me with this - the sugary sweetness of a banana last fall plunged me into dangerous mood swings and severe depression. A couple weeks ago I had 1 tsp of fresh squeezed pure cane juice and felt like I'd had three glasses of wine.

So, experimenting to figure it out for myself can be a bit hazardous to my health. I understand to some extend there'll be an element of "up to me" to learn how things work for my body, but I'd REALLY like be able to make educated guesses so that I can eat as wide a variety of fruits as possible minimizing the risk of dangerous side effects.

Does anyone know of a good list? An authoritative list? At least a list most people agree on and isn't supremely confusing?

The most comprehensive list I've seen is Dr. Graham's food combining chart.

I don't have time to type it all out, but it's a thorough list of acid fruits, sub-acid fruits, melons and sweet fruits. It is an excellent chart.

Have you ever thought about inquiring on his forum about your intolerance and reaction to sweet fruit? It's on vegsource, then on the Raw & Sports forum. There may be some great advice on there.

If you have a problem with sweet fruits (like me!) you may have malabsorption of fructose especially. Sweet fruits especially are very high in fructose, and not everybody can handle this. I learned that in Central Europe for example 30-40% of the people have an intolerance to fructose! There is also a rare genetic disorder which we are not talking about here.

If you have malabsorption of fructose then you can eat acid or subacid fruits, yes, but in moderation. Those fruits also have fructose, and by eating a lot of them you may still get more than your system can handle. Tomatoes are also high in fructose. And if fructose is a problem for you then you may also have problems with wheat and onions for example which have a high percentage of fructans.

Glucose helps to absorb the fructose, so fruits with more glucose than fructose can be better tolerated. I found this list somewhere, see if it makes sense with your experience:
