Zoloft advice please!

I was hoping someone might have some advice regarding weaning off Zoloft? I have taken Zoloft for just about 2 years, 200 mg. for the first year, 150 mg. for a few months, and so on decreasing the dosage down to now 25 mg. As you can tell, I weaned down VERY slowly as to avoid withdrawl symptoms. Four days ago, I decided it was time to stop the medication altogether (since I had been on 25 mg. for several months). To my dismany, I am experiencing zap-like feelings in my head that are actually painful!! Hoping someone out there might be able to share a similar experience with stopping Zoloft and what they did to make the process easier to handle. Do you think I should have decreased even more, perhaps 12.5 mg? I believed decreasing from 200 mg. down to 25 mg. over the course of a year was quite conservative so I am surprised that I am experiencing these withdrawl-like symptoms. Hate to start taking the medication again, if I can just get through this rough period! Also, I am planning to do an intestinal cleanse next week and so that is why I thought it was the perfect time to stop the Zoloft, so that my body could truly begin to cleanse. Does it seem like I am trying to do too much all at once??? Would really love some input on this, as some other information I have read on the internet scares me into thinking that I might have to go back on the medication, which I would like to avoid if possible. By the way, I have been about 75% raw for just about 2 weeks now. So, brand new to this way of eating but truly know it is the best. Thanks, in advance, for any and all help! P.S. LOVE this site - Rawguru, you're doing a great job!!! Thanks for your dedication in making this a great forum for all of us! You're awesome!

Hi Val, I appreciate your post!

Its a little in the grey area to give medical advice. The FDA doesn't like stop medication speeches from non md's.

Luckily there is a great book out from Dr. Gabriel Cousens called "Depression Free for Life." His book was like the Earth thanking the Sun for me. If you read it, please take the opportunity to do some self research with the suggested program. (AKA use it! )

When I went Raw I did it all at once without really knowing what would happen. I'll I had to go on was this little willingness that told me I had to change right now. I had been taking a drug called depakote (for years) and usually a ssri with it. I got really sick from the cleansing process. Infact I had really really strange dreams and night sweats for 3 months. I felt great in the daytime though. I lost 40 pounds. I got really thin. The dramatic, and unflattering weight loss didn't bother me though because I felt a genuine hapiness.

I woke up most days with the taste of medicine in my mouth. I speculate it was the effects of it leaving my body. A lot of my detox feelings most likely also came from the cleansing of 6 years of Chicago's binging nightlife.

Then what happened? Well then the detox symptoms vanished. Then I felt better and more aware than I had any previous mental equivelent of. It continues to get even better to this day. I'm muscular now. My body weight is normalized. I look 5 years younger instead of 15 years older.

The biggest surprise was the spiritual component. I wasn't aware of anything like that before. Suddenly I wanted to stop watching the news and stop reading the papers. The new me didn't want to be distracted anymore

Peace Val. All the answers you need will come to you. Stay with living foods it might amaze you

Thanks, RevKale for your personal insight. I will definitely check out the book you suggested by Gabriel Cousens. Also, it's so good to hear from someone who has dealt with the detox issues I am dealing with (yes, I know what you mean about those bizarre dreams - what's that all about??).....more importantly, that you survived the detox and your're now thriving. That is awesome, congratulations! I am so looking forward to experiencing the same. Thanks for taking the time to share. Peace be with you, too!

Val, years ago I took prozac for a while and decided to get off off it cold turkey. I had what sounds to me like similar pains in my head... I felt like they travelled along the veins and I kept thinking I was going to have a brain anurysm(sp) or something! It was awful! I remember I took a lot of aspirin because it's supposed to open blood vessels and I waited it out. If I remember correctly, it was bad about a week then started to decrease. I, also, had bizarre dreams. I dreamt of the end of the world in vivid detail every night!! I think you are doing ok, but if it is still continuing I would reconsider starting Ejuva next week and wait a bit longer because that will also do things to you. Give your body a few weeks rest maybe?
Best to you.

Elsaraw, thanks for sharing. It's been 12 days since stopping Zoloft. The head "zaps" have actually decreased quite a bit but they're still there. The way I felt last Friday (a week ago), I never thought I would make it through the weekend because they hurt so bad. But here it is, a whole week later and I'm feeling much better. Glad I stuck it out and didn't go back to taking the medicine again. Depending on how I feel next week, I may start the cleanse. However, I like what you said about giving my body time to rest. I'll have to play it by ear. Thanks for the advice!

I used to take Lexapro for a while, getting over my ex...I was on a very small dose, so quitting cold turkey was pretty easy when I decided to. Only problem I had was that I got really hungry....I probably should have weaned myself off of it.

Hi, I don't think you should worry too much about the withdrawal symptoms as I think they will cease quite quickly. I was on cipramil and stopped it cold turkey without any serious pain. Drink heaps of green juices or water or both. Annie
