What's your idea of a good detox?

I've been considering a detox to really jumpstart my RAW diet, and I was wondering what the best cleansing/detox fasting period would be for you?

For example:
How long?
What kind of juices/vitamins/foods if any?
With what other goals in mind?

And have any of you ever done a thirty day detox? If so, how did it turn out? How did you feel?

Thanks!

Detoxing is really a way of getting the impurities OUT of your body, so taking supplements during a cleanse or fast would not be the best idea, since supplements are usually not natural and can be very toxic to your system, as they are not coming to you in any kind of a natural form, but a processed, extracted, unnatural form.

There are different kinds of fasts and cleanses, it's important to be prepared, and if undertaking something as health-changing as a water fast, be sure it is supervised by a professional.

You may want to look into juice feasting, as a way of giving your body a rest from digestion and extra energy for healing. http://www.rawreform.com/content/view/271/137

Whichever you do, be sure to maintain a healthy lifestyle of whole fresh foods, actvitiy, fresh air, sunshine etc. or your body will be sure to return to its original state as before the cleanse/fast/detox.

I did a 30 day fast once. I've done lots of fasts and programs and colon cleansing - just about everything you can think of when I was starting out 20 years ago. Wheatgrass rectal implants, high colonics, herbs to cleanse the colon, herbs to this and herbs to that. Water fasts, Master cleanses, Green Juice fasts, liquid foods and superfoods.

They all sucked. No, really. I mean it!!! The very best detox I have ever done is to go raw slowly and stay raw with no side affects, no yo yo, no symptoms - just feeling better and better and better. Detoxing hurts, it's not fun, you smell, you get tired or dizzy or woozy or can't think straight or just aren't as strong. Eating raw you get stronger and stronger, cleaner and cleaner, clearer and clearer, happier and happier - all with no down-side. Raw foods rock!!!

Since I'm in the middle of a detox right now, this is either the best time, or the worst time for me to answer this, depending on your perspective

I am doing a 10 day liver detox, under my chiro's supervision. It's actually a program put out by Metagenics. While the company is very good, and products are excellent, there are some drawbacks.

My story: I have been 50-70% raw for about 2 months. My cooked food consists of fruits, veges, minimal grains, and some poultry and lamb. Oh, and eggs. No pasturized dairy, no beef, absolutely no gluten. And I don't eat packaged food. When I went raw, my colon naturally worked itself out. I do try to focus on eating things that are good cleansers for my organs, especially my liver (I have been on steriodal drugs for asthma for a long time) to combat the damage that happens through my daily living. I figure I've given my "filter" extra jobs to do, so I should be extra good to it.

This cleanse requires you to drink a powdered protein supplement which is not raw. The rest of your food can be raw, but it's also an elimination process, so for a few days you are down to minimal fat, protein mostly from the supplement, and then fruits and veges, but not a lot of variety. Then you start adding things back.

While I suppose this would work for the average person that needs to clean up their system and stop eating things that are bad for them, it hasn't worked great for me. I was doing better, felt better, and I think was overall better when i was simply raw. It could be that my liver is benefiting from this, but today is day 6, and I'm skeptical. I felt lousy "good" for a couple of days, but now I'm feeling lousy "bad" and so tonight I had a pudding that I make with pine nuts and young coconuts and fruit, and i felt better within a few minutes.

I'm less convinced after doing this that it's needed at all, but I'm going to finish it out and see.... I think you can benefit just as much from eating raw and making sure you eat a variety of foods that are good for your organs.

The one thing I think is helpful for me personally is that I've eliminated so much from my diet, and now I have the option of deciding what I add back in. So if you are looking to drastically change your eating habits, or find out if certain foods don't agree with you, then it might be a great option for you.

Hey Melissa,

A little story to demonstrate your point.

We have a friend who was selling a product that was supposed to do all sorts of wonderful things for you mostly based on seaweed I think. She would do blood samples before and after having the drink to show how your red blood cells reacted. My husband did it (he isn't raw) and the typical response occured. His red blood cells started to seperate and unclot and the whole picture looked better. When she did it for me however, after the drink my blood cells STARTED to clump together and the whole picture looked worse! The product wasn't raw. I asked her if she had ever done a test on a person who ate all raw before and she said no. I felt a tangible drop in energy after drinking this supplement. Supplements that make regular eaters feel better can make a raw foodist feel ill because it's all relative. Eating all raw is so clean, supportive to the system and good for you that most other things will just dampen it's effects.

That's my opinion and my story,

Greenbunny

Thanks for affirming this for me! I was starting to wonder if it was in my head. Because I think this probably has some good benefits for me, if nothing else, to kind of "start over" in terms of what to eat and what works for my body. I don't think this supplement is bad by any means, but I don't think that any processed/cooked whatever can work like raw once you are high-raw. I mean, it wasn't a detox like I wanted sweets or bread, because I really don't eat them. My body was screaming for avocados and hemp seeds.

Again, different things work for different people, but I'm glad to know my experience wasn't out of the ordinary for a raw foodist....

Thank you for all your replies!

They were very helpful
I've been looking to detox/fast, and this helps a lot. I think I'm just going to ease myself into the raw lifestyle for now, and we'll see what happens from there!

(And I've been about 90% raw for about two weeks now, and I already feel A LOT better. My energy is way up, and I'm rarely as hungry as I used to be. It's great!)

Thanks,
Nicole
