You could tell them you are on a cleanse for health reasons, that you're trying vegetarian for a month, or that you're not in the mood for the BBQ meat, and then eat from the vegetarian side dishes. Beyond the meat (the main course), people will probably not pay attention to what you are and aren't eating. Why not tell them you're bringing the salad, make some green goddess dressing (avacado, lemon juice, salt), then eat two platefuls before eating the other food.

Also, i am still eating olives, is this ok? When i feel the need, i have half a slice of wholegrain bread. I feel really guilty, but my body feels it needs it at the moment.... Is wholegrain bread better than potatoes or rice to satisfy my cooked food craving?
When you eat non-raw food. You will most likely feel better if you eat it with a large salad (or bananas and raisins with grainy breakfast food). This will keep your raw percentage higher, add fiber, and also lend some digestive enzymes (especially in the case of the greens).

In my mind, the continuum of food choices from good to not so good is something like this (this is just a generalization, different people's bodies will react differently or have different convictions about each of these foods):
  • raw
  • steamed (or cooked) veggies, tofu, cooked non-starch roots & sweet potatoes
  • cooked non-gluten grains and beans
  • cooked gluten grains and cooked starches
  • Dairy and eggs (prefer organic, veg fed)
  • Meat (prefer organic, grass fed), soda, sugar drinks, diet drinks
Sounds like you went from meat eater to raw vegan overnight. That's a pretty big step. While cold turkey works for some, and is the quickest way to get beyond eating anything cooked at all, other people work their way up to 100% over time. Any time you add more raw foods to your diet, you begin to improve your health. So, rejoice that you found this diet and that you have started the journey to a healthier more vibrant you. It will take time before you understand how to eat enough raw, how much IS enough, and what your body is really craving.

Important: Try not to feel guilty about what you are eating, even if it's not on your diet. Negative emotions can make the body acidic just like cooked foods. Enjoy your time with your family and don't let food ruin it.
