We have a regular blender too and use kale a lot. We never soften it (but you certainly can), we just tear it into smaller pieces and toss it in. However, we do NOT use the thick center stem. That's really tough.
I make a green smoothie too:
1 cup water
1 cup spinach
1/2 cup cilantro (or less, however much you want)
1/2 T agave
I've been reading it's really best on your digestive system to not mix fruits and vegetables, so I use agave instead of fruit to sweeten it (it's really bitter without some kind of help).
