Actually, as a student of religions, there are only two major contemporary religions that claim the existence of God and aren't polytheistic: Judaism and Islam. Christianity claims Christ as a God so the Moslems consider that to be worshiping another God besides Allah. They do like Jesus as a prophet however, but one of the major concepts of Christianity is Christ as God. So, it is not purely monotheistic. Buddhism doesn't claim a God, Either does Taoism. The polytheistic cultures in which those religions sprang or spread to had a tendency to interpret them in their own polytheistic terms - but in their pure form and actual teachings, they are not polytheistic or even God-centered. Hinduism is the most diverse and allows you to worship the all as a concept or in many forms as Gods if that works for you. Am I forgetting anyone? So basically, most of the world is still quite without God or polytheistic - and with many more than 20 Gods to keep track of I'm afraid.
Well, that's my rambling right back at ya.
